The Fed’s national deputy vice president Craig Etchells hosted a visit by his local Labour MP, Jeff Smith, to his shop in Chorlton on October 2.

During the meeting, the prominent role this shop plays in the community was discussed – something that was clear from the number of people coming into the business to say hello to Craig and chat with him.

Craig explained the range of services the business offers, including HND and the fact that he – and one of his paper boys – featured on BBC Breakfast on September 17.

There was much talk around the real challenges faced by independent retailers, including the impact of retail crime and the need for greater support from local council trading standards teams. This will be particularly important, given forthcoming regulatory change and the recent ban on single use vapes.

Retailers’ increasing operating costs, particularly following the Autumn 2024 Budget, were also discussed.

Commenting on the meeting, the Fed’s political engagement coordinator Doug Oliver said:
“The overall tone was extremely positive, despite the challenging economic situation. Jeff was clearly pleased to see the central role played by Craig’s team in the community and keen to support in the future where he can.

“ If Fed members would like to organise future meetings with their MPs, please do get in touch by emailing douglas.oliver@nfrn.org.uk. We are keen to ensure the voice of members is heard at the highest level politically.”
